NON SURGICAL TREATMENT FOR
GUM DISEASE
The government's Medical Center for Health Services Research has released results of a "Cost Effectiveness Analysis of Periodontal Disease Control" described as one of the first studies to apply cost- effectiveness research to clinical dentistry. The center is part of the Department of Health and Human Services. The study evaluated costs and benefits of available treatment options for periodontal disease. It was based on a review of published randomized control trials concerning the relative effectiveness of periodontal treatments and estimates of tooth loss and side effects. In announcing completion of the study, the center said, "RESULTS SHOWED THAT PATIENTS TREATED WITH NONSURGICAL METHODS KEPT THEIR TEETH LONGER--AND SUFFERED FEWER SIDE EFFECTS SUCH AS PAIN AND POOR AESTHETICS FROM EXPOSED ROOTS--THAN THOSE TREATED BY MORE EXPENSIVE SURGICAL PROCEDURES. |
